If you don't mind nested divitis I found a method that works consistently.

So, until css allows multiple backgrounds on a single element this is what I do.
I also to put in the whole image but if the screen is stretched so that
the div becomes wider than the image, the image does not stretch to meet
the background size - is there any way to have the background image
stretch to meet a larger sized div ?
