I highly recommend CodeIgniter http://codeigniter.com. I find it less restricting than other frameworks. As far as arguments against using an MVC package... There aren't many. Maybe if you are literally doing one simple page I might not use one. A good PHP framework will speed up your work, help avoid bugs and will make it MUCH easier to maintain the code. I would try out CodeIgniter, Cake and maybe one or two others and see which works for you. Good luck!
