When using mod_rewrite if you use the R=301 flag it does a redirect
and sends a 301 status code. That's the exact same thing that
RedirectPermanent does.

In case it's of any help to anyone here, not all rewrites are created
equal, but this one is quick and painless, We've found that people tend
to get themselves all in a loop when trying to redirect without
affecting subdomains besides www (if they have subdomains on the same
server as some people do.) A KB article by yours truly: 301 Redirect
from non-www to ww -- Without Looping!

I have another article up on permanently redirecting 'extra' domain
names, which also helps with this sort of thing.
