I just thought of one answer to my question. One of the disadvantages to using SFTP is that you cannot utilized built in SVN tools in your editor (at least those that I am familiar with)—they only work on a local copy. This requires my team to do all of their SVN management (update, check-in, branch, etc) via the command line.
