Unless Dmitrijs has some magic tricks we can use, I'd got with 2) as 500k isn't 
a big deal and the branch itself or the resulting source tarball are compressed 
anyway. So we're just talking about 500k on disk when unpacked, which isn't 
that big really.

The main advantage there is that we'll actually be able to see changes in a 
vaguely reasonable way (very long diff) and we'll be able to diff the abi files 
between each other without extra tools (not sure what such a diff would look 
like though).
