If the plan is to have LC just be a tool for gathering the bits together, and 
then to spit out an e-book that other tools can read, look at the EPUB format:

If instead you want use LC as the book reader itself, and bring external text 
into it and then format it into pages and chapters, it might be worth limiting 
the input text to RTF. When we did this in 1992 we used a Claris extension that 
could read many different text formats, but I doubt that software still exists, 
or could work inside LC.
