Would it help eliminate one cause if Bernard tried to duplicate his crashes while using the metacard ide? If it turned out to be stable, that would tie it down. If they still happened, that also would be quite informative.
I notice Andre says that on Mint 3.0 works well. Might be worth a try too, just for the sake of elimination.
