In this case, I'm not sure what you mean by "secure disk image access" but SSH is useful for debugging traditional scripting languages (bash, php, ruby etc).

You could compile & debug on your own install of Linux and then upload to on-rev but as anyone who has used Linux knows, not all Linux installs are equal. Library dependencies are the main issue.
