I've a stack called Screen Gamma at: http://www.altuit.com/webs/altuit2/runrev/tutorials.htm
It's a collection of some studies I did awhile ago on this very subject. The long and short of it is:
1) I don't recommend ever changing the screen gamma unless absolutely necessary.
2) If you can, use very high quality JPG files as they display close to the same on both platforms.
