I just recently asked the same question to a friend of mine who's doing
3D professionally. He said, the best way to do that is... manually...

I'm not sure how to best go about this in Realsoft 3D, but he said in
XSI he can make the vertices of the original high poly model "magnetic"
which makes it comparatively easy and straightforward to select the most
"significant" vertices for the low poly model. Symmetry is also
something that can help a lot, so I you have a symmetric model, you
basically can save half the work by only doing one side and simply
mirroring the other(s).

Finally, there's a function in XSI to create a normal map from the high
poly model to be used on the low poly model for keeping as much detail
as possible. So that's something that the tool can do for you ;-)

I'm not experienced enough in Realsoft 3D to know how to do it there
(i.e. what possibilities are available), but I'm sure there's others who
can help with that ;-)

Sunny regards,
Jashan
