I don't know if I'm using the same version of Magnolia as you, nevertheless, I just had a look at MailCommand.java (trunk) and it's quite verbose, http://svn.magnolia.info/view/magnolia/trunk/magnolia-module-mail/src/main/java/info/magnolia/cms/mail/commands/?rev=13503 There should be messages about its activity in the magnolia log, if not, maybe try to set the log level for it at DEBUG and run your workflow again.
