a) What kind of layout problems are you facing?
The highlighting of context menus of trees in IE7.
The login page in IE 6.
I have not seen neither of the two problems yet. Although I do not work
in IE except if I have to. But none of our customers have ever mentioned
any problems there. Maybe if you could publish some screenshots
somewhere so that we could compare it to our results..?

b) It's an _author_ instance, so a rather closed, controlled
environment. Most of our customers use IE too, but everybody was more
than willing to switch to Firefox when I explained them that it would
be a quicker & safer ride.
Our customers are rather conservative.
Conservative in what respect?
The clientele that is usually described as "conservative". They tend to
run old IE versions. If you have such customers, you know how is meant.
I think to renounce the use of a safer and
fastster browser does not really qualify as "conservative"... ;-)
But by the end of the day... Magnolia should work properly at least in
IE7. If your customers insist on using IE6 I think they are beyond help.
Yeah right, telling customers there they are figging idiots. Sounds like
the way to go.
Cheers
