Neither solution is satisfactory:
(1) glibc 2.3 is now a little old
(2) so is UML 2.4, which is lacking some interesting features.

I have not tried (1) as it would require a full system rebuild under Gentoo
(2) was enough to let me restart some guests but has now started to fail
too with 'kernel too old' message.
