FWIW, I also get the control characters when running in an Emacs shell buffer.
This is on OSX 10.6.4, Gradle 0.9RC1 GNU Emacs 22.3.1
(i386-apple-darwin9.8.0, Carbon Version 1.6.0)
of 2010-01-10 on gs674-seijiz.local
