We're doing most development and testing for Lily on single node developer workstations as well, including pseudo-distributed. Maybe our unit tests can be inspiring, bringing up and tearing down HBase/HDFS/ZK. Our integration/distribution tests run against EC2 though we're trying to source real hardware for performance testing.
