Just one thing, though : I'm not particularly looking for a CMS solution, but rather was wondering if someone had developed web-based applications with Midgard and Zope, and could give some feedback.

Zope looks very interesting, but before dumping PHP, I'm looking for some experienced opinion on why Midgard, or any PHP-based tool for that matter, wouldn't do the trick.

It depends what you're trying to do, Midgard is very flexible, right now I can't think of anything one would do with a scripted language that Midgard+PHP couldn't handle.

As a total Midgard newbie, a couple of things I find missing from the site:
1. No "Hello world" sample. Plenty of infos on the internal structure of Midgard, but no way for a newbie to understand how to write Midgard code, and especially how it differs from plain PHP

The main site documentation is indeed lacking, however Aegir comes with a nice sample site which should help with getting a basic website/testing environment running.

Midgard offers extensions to plain PHP, Midgard programming doesn't differ too much from "normal" PHP programming, except for the templating (style) system (which is rather complex but extremely powerfull) and URL parsing (since it's not files based)

2. Not enough infos on what the added benefits Midgard 2 will bring. This might of help for people who don't have to start coding today, and would rather wait for Midgard 2.

Now it seems that Midgard 2 is actually coming along again, but there was a phase when the development was for all practical purposes frozen and without major corporate sponsor it might not advance as quickly as we hoped for. Midgard 2 will be backwards compatible so I don't see any reason to wait. The added benefits are mainly in (even) more flexibility.

3. No comparison with other tools to build web-applications, or even that sub-set which is CMS.

OSCOM should help with this, see www.oscom.org
