There are many precedents for exactly this approach, including several
here at Apache:

* HTTP server (1.3 and 2.0 are totally different)

* Tomcat (3.x and 4.x were totally different)

as well as external examples (Windows 3.x versus XP, or ASP to
ASP.NEt, or VB to VB.Net, for example).
