And if your looking for an AJAX solution, AjaxParts Taglib (APT) in Java Web Parts (JWP) offers an XSLT response handler that does its work on the client, and as is typical with APT, it's all done without you writing any code yourself...

Click on the javadocs link and check out the ajaxparts package, you'll find the taglib there... the summary for it has all the details, including the XSLT response handler. Looks like SourceForge may be having trouble at the moment though.
