Hi,

Velocity was created and released under Apache license terms as a clean room
re-implementation of WebMacro which used the file extension "*.wm".

Velocity used a file extension of "*.vm", standing for "Velocity Macro". Other
extensions are also being used for Velocity templates: ".vtl" and ".vsl"
(Velocity Stylesheet).

The declarative Velocity engine DVSL additionally uses either ".dvsl" or
".vslt" extensions (analogous to ".xslt").

Kind regards,
Christoph

P.S. I just saw Nathan answered almost the same while I just finished this
answer.
