Plus, what's up with the scheme of one patch per file, rather than one
patch per problem to be solved? That seems like a severe pain to manage,
and contrary to the way all the other components do things. Or am I
misreading what's going on?

The patch file structure was created by a person who has since left
Oracle. I'll keep that in mind. My immediate purpose was to fix a
security bug and a core dump bug.
