I've never seen anyone use Samba to share a KahaDB directory; are you sure that Samba provides file-locking semantics that are compatible with master/slave KahaDB? NFSv4 is what I've typically seen done, and unless you've found an article or a wiki page that says that Samba is supposed to work for your use case, I'd expect that's why it's not working as you want it to.
