I removed the failover:() construct ...
it still hangs, but now I get the following on stderr: (using the expired
cert)

Error occurred while accessing an OpenSSL library method:
error:0906D06C:PEM routines:PEM_read_bio:no start line
error:140B0009:SSL routines:SSL_CTX_use_PrivateKey_file:PEM lib

... still no mention of an expired cert
