Just a head's up, if you upgrade to Spring Security 3.0, you need to upgrade to Freemarker 2.3.16 also. Otherwise, you will be hit with really weird invalid session errors. This is because Spring Security now invalidates current sessions and creates a new one whenever you log in, in order to prevent session fixation attacks.
