IMHO, I think a proper Security framework has a bit higher priority, especially since remote work would require it, but I guess one could put in some rudimentary security checks first, and then upgrade the Service Management Solution when the security framework is in place. I would say that the first step would be to make Merlin JMX capable, meaning that it should create MBeans on-the-fly for the components that are instantiated and expose the methods declared in the service interface. I think all this would sit in the avalon/merlin/activation/impl... You would be dealing with what Stephen calls the Appliance, which is a kind of manager of the block (was it?). I assume that when the Appliance is created, the MBean is created at the same time, but this is way beyond what I have dug into so far...
