I had followed the cvs instructions prior to trying the tutorial. The only difference is that I added a soft-link to <...>/merlin/bin/merlin to my local <usr>/bin directory. The merlin.sh is listed as deprecated. I just got done fooling around with the distribution images and was able to get things going with one important difference. the <...>/merlin/bin/merlin script in that directory produces anomalous results. I had to use the merlin.sh script in that directory. I haven't finished exploring the differences. My next attempt will be to get the latest from CVS again (I recently killed it all to perform the experiments above) and rebuild. I'll then try to use the scripts from the distribution image in place of those in the CVS repository.
