The container is not providing Thread-support by definition. It is the components collective head-ache, i.e. either the component itself handles its own threading issues or it request the service of another component to handle it. As for threading internal to Merlin, I suspect there is room for a lot of improvement, and I whave promised myself to take a deep look into it early next year. As for JDK 1.5, I agree with LSD that we need to keep compatibility with 1.3 for some time to come. BUT, if we continue the trend to "chop up" Merlin into pluggable subsystems within a Merlin microkernel, we may evolve from 1.3 -> 1.5 by creating a completely new subsystem (Meta for instance). I (and some other) are also having an interest in J2ME, so there might also be subsystems for "downsizing" to J2ME compliant (CDC is apparently almost possible now, CLDC is my target).
