I would strongly recommend that noone use Fortress for any new development, as
it is going into a kind of transitional termination, meaning we will continue
to support bug fixes for a while, and then terminate the Fortress branch.
The same goes for Excalibur and its Component Manager.

A few days a go the community agreed on a Single Platform strategy, meaning
Merlin will become the reference container and the only container developed
within the Avalon project itself.

Merlin comes with some fairly simple examples. It is still work-in-progress
(like just about everything), and I am not sure exactly was included in the
latest release, but checkout the CVS in

avalon/merlin/platform/tutorials

DId I mention that you should investigate Merlin, as the platform for you?
Some of the most appreciated features are;

* Automatic assembly of component dependencies.

* Central Repository of Jars, meaning no need to specify classpaths to Jars,
and keep track of which version of Jars is required etc... No more JAR Hell.

* Possible to bootstrap Merlin via command-line of the version of your
choice.

* Strong Type checking during assembly/composition.

* Aggregated Components, meaning assemble a set of components, and make that
into a new Service/Component.

Other features;

* Custom Context entries.

* Custom Context subclasses.

* Extensions through many hooks.

Some of the developments that are in progress or will start soon;

*  Better embeddable support.
* Merlin manage your Servlets as they were components.
*  Pluggable LifeCycles.
*  Component-based Security
*  Subject-based Security (JAAS leverage)

Finally, Merlin will also be supported in the development IDE, through
MerlinDeveloper, an Eclipse plugin.

One feature is sometimes not appreicated: Too Much Magic, but Merlin was all
about Magic  :o)

Cheers
Niclas
