Great news for academic types! EndNote works well under Crossover Office 4.2!

I bought Crossover Office (CO) 4.2 (WINE) last week and have been happily using
it to run EndNote4 (old, but it meets my needs) while writing a paper with OO
1.1.3. Contrary to my assumptions, CO requires no separate VFAT partition and
not one bit of Microsoft software. It downloaded and installed into my Linux
home directory without a hitch. It then installed EndNote4 within my home
directory (using the unsupported package option). I moved some old Windows
EndNote libraries into my home directory and was in business.

Downloading references from PubMed involves two wrinkles:

1. PubMed has changed the format of its references (again). An updated filter
for EndNote is available from www.endnote.com/enpmalert.asp (see the section
dated 14 Jan 04).

2. The process for downloading references involves a few steps. Briefly, you
put your selected references on PubMed's Clipboard in Medline (plain text)
format, save these references in a text file on your machine, run EndNote, and
import the references using File > Import. This process is well described at
www.lib.uiowa.edu/hardin/endnote_pubmed.html

You can also manually enter references and, as I mentioned above, utilize old
libraries developed during your Windows days.

Bringing references into an OO/Linux document is simple: Select the desired
references in the EndNote library, press Cntl-C, position the cursor within the
OO document, and press Cntl-V. The process for developing the final, referenced
document is also easy: Save the OO document in RTF. Run EndNote and open the
relevant library. Run Scan paper. Save the now-completed document in RTF.
Print it under OO. It is best to consider the RTF document as the first step
in the print queue do all subsequent revisions and editing on the original OO
document and, thereby, avoid a nasty case of version confusion.

So, at last, I am able to sever all dependence on that loathsome, abusive
monopoly, Microsoft. Hurray!
