I tried the following

- stop the vm
- enable extra config in global setting "enable.additional.vm.configuration"
- change account setting "allow.additional.vm.configuration.list.kvm"
to "sysinfo,system,entry", of course you can change global or domain
settings.
- update extra config of vm
cmk update virtualmachine id=2446f9d9-83ad-4b4c-bf3e-df041a390fcf
extraconfig="<sysinfo type='smbios'>     <system>      <entry
name='serial'>MISERIAL</entry>    </system>  </sysinfo>"
- start the vm

vm has the following setting, which looks ok

  <sysinfo type='smbios'>
    <system>
      <entry name='serial'>MISERIAL</entry>
    </system>
  </sysinfo>
  <sysinfo type='smbios'>
    <system>
      <entry name='manufacturer'>Apache Software Foundation</entry>
      <entry name='product'>CloudStack KVM Hypervisor</entry>
      <entry name='uuid'>2446f9d9-83ad-4b4c-bf3e-df041a390fcf</entry>
    </system>
  </sysinfo>
