I've verified with testpmd that the connection works. Since I'm in a virtual machine, I don't have a physical cable to loopback, so I added more virtual NICs and bridged them externally. I've also submitted a patch to the e1000 driver to add support for loopback mode. I don't have the physical hardware, so I can only verify that it works in QEMU with e1000 and e1000e.
