Never turn hyper-threading off if running (any) BSD or Linux. The schedulers understand hyperthreads.
In terms of compression programs, presumably they have an option to specify how many threads to create to do the compression. Simply test with 1, 2, and 4 threads to determine the optimal number. -Matt
