The problem was fixed. All that was needed was a re installation of the shell. as to why I was using GNOME. it was a matter of curiosity as I am new to unix (only had it for 2 weeks on the laptop) & I wanted to experience all that it had to offer me. still have a long way to go yet but GNOME 3 on my system is working fine and I would dare say that it when combined with Docky makes a very nice environment to work in. there is a trade off though. if you use it you lose assess to the Home Dash as it is a core part of unity I believe.
