I strongly recommend some computer crash curse. File name associations are free. There is nothing hard wired to the system. You can open any file with any program you want. You can tell your desktop environment which programs can open which types of files and which single program is the preferred one to be used on double-click. First of all, any user who is forced to use MS Windows should turn off the option to hide known file name extensions.
