Our existing SGE installation was provisioned by someone who's since left the university. We wanted to experiment some before we move to the new version in production. I'm going to toot my own horn here. For those of you who want to experiment with SGE and other cluster settings, you might want to see my "Rocks-In-The-Box" document. This describes how to quickly and easily create a virtual Rocks cluster in one physical machine using VirtualBox. You'd never run anything in this mode that needs real performance but it's a great way to fool around with SGE settings without impacting your production cluster. The document is at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1OBMW9zNqVsIc4ZG5vn66FBZubd9afe_slXBuLkdbHek/edit?hl=en# Although I haven't tested this method using anything other than Rocks but I suspect that other clustering software would work fine too.
