Why anonymous? Are you up to no good?

Anyway, this is all public information. The password formats are
described in detail here:
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/misc/password_encryptions.html

The defaults are different on different platforms for backward-compat
reasons. crytp was the long-time standard, and therefore used by
default on all unix platforms to allow backward compatibility. But
crypt isn't (or at least wasn't at the time) available by default on
windows, so another format was used.
