Quick follow up -- The web fuseki interface is happy loading the turtle equivalent. Takes more time (~10-15 sec) than it takes for the programmatic way to return an error (<2 sec), it's about 900k triples.
So I was thinking of splitting my INSERT and was wondering if there is a reasonable chunk size. As said, will try to look at the logs anyway.
