Thanks very much! I have no experience with Clonezilla and the tar seems to be
doing the work so I will stick to it for now.
I've used Clonezilla. It's handy for imaging new machines from a master machine
(I'm working for someone doing that right now) but otherwise it's rather
tedious and is rather aimed at getting data from an arbitrary machine to
another over a network, its core strength. It'll image multiple machines at
once, too.
If you've got the drives mounted locally already it is probably not worth the
pain.
Anecdote: I once did some work for a group where they insisted on making new
VMs by using Ghost (similar use case to Clonezilla) to a new blank VM. Instead
of, you know, just copying a drive image file :-(
