Oh, and this bit (above)...  It's hard to predict future needs, and I
have my doubts about any modern hardware (including drives) lasting 10
years.

That was another reason I favoured the buy a new drive periodically,
and do the next install on it scheme.

Sure, most of my drives have lasted well, but my first PC's drive
overheated because the PC case design wasn't that brilliant.  It only
seemed to suffer temporary problems, and became reliable after
installing an extra cooling fan near it.  But my trust was gone.
