Joking aside, disk drives that are taken care of really do tend to
fail either very early (infant mortality) or very near the end of the
warranty period. I don't think I've seen a modern consumer drive with
a warranty of more than a few years, certainly nowhere near 10.
Abused drives will fail sooner.

When I ordered the desktop, I asked that the drives be fully S.M.A.R.T.
monitorable. I hope the shop employee(s) complied! It's not perfect,
but it seems to be the best I can hope for.
