it takes a little (just noticeable not slow: it is a dir with more than
300 files) but it works.

I've sometimes found KDE hangs at the 'icons'/splash stage and it's
invariably because of a link in my home directory to a mount point
which is timing out.

I don't have an icons directory, so it is not a timeout on mounting some
device.
