I write software in the past, but "in house" software. Problematic are the
same with distributed software, and I'm agree with you.

But Ingres is now an old software, with many qualities and some issues, like
every others software ...

I suggest you contribute to the code to correct that :-)

It should be looking to $II_SYSTEM/ingres/<something> for disk space if it
can't find any elsewhere, for example, /tmp. Heck, even Windows has
C:\TEMP (or varriant thereof).  There's NOTHING that should go into any
ole random directory - ever! - without good cause for it to be the local
current directory of the user. It's not as if it doesn't/can't know where
its disk space is!

I don't know if you write software or not, but I do, and I would be
embarassed beyond belief if any code I wrote behaved this way. Anyway, in
short, it impacts usability (without cause) and is therefore a usability
bug (presuming one ranks the severity of bugs).
