I was able to untar it on a Linux box that I have, but, I was thinking that it would be nice if a .zip file distribution were provided as well as the .tar.gz. Pretty much every other Java package that I've used always has had a .zip file distro.

You mean as opposed to tar.gz?  The .tar.gz is just a unix thing.
Most zip utilities for Windows can handle it (WinAce and RAR both do.)
Eventually we should probably consider supporting .zip though.
