I did find something on Stack Overflow <https://stackoverflow.com/questions/56952163/ubuntu-18-04-netbeans-10-0-fatal-error-unable-to-find-package-java-lang-in-clas> about using a JDK that is later than the installed version of NetBeans. I have installed OpenJDK 14. I think this advice is dubious, but I am going to follow it now by uninstalling 14 and installing 12. I'll post something saying how I get on.
