I fear that project has slowed down considerably. I remember back in 2014 and 2015 that there were pleads from project members for more community involvement. In days when they were racing toward JPA 2.0 OpenJPA was the second implementation in the world to support all the features fully - and mostly because most of those were already there in OpenJPA or were easy to implement.
