Could someone please tell me how to turn off automatic numbering in Writer so it stays off?

You mean when you start a paragraph with something like "1." or "1)"? Two answers:

o Always think of keeping the facility and dealing it with it piecemeal when it happens. The action of pressing Enter to complete the first paragraph causes an automatic "correction" which you will notice. The correction is a separate process from the paragraph break that you actually want. So if you go *immediately* to Edit | Undo (or Ctrl+Z), you can remove the correction but retain the part you need.

o If you really want to disable this correction process completely, remove the tick from Tools | AutoCorrect Options... | Options | Apply numbering - symbol: *.

Thanks, Brian -- but that Option was already unticked.

In that case, you may have to explain what you mean by "automatic numbering". Can you reproduce this by typing in a new document? How?

Anything else?

Paragraph styles can have associated numbering styles. Are you using such a paragraph style? Or have you applied a list style - which can have numbering as their format?
