This often happens when there was a hasty shutdown or crash of the computer. Click on the Apple icon and select Force Quit. Close any program/app other than Finder that is running. Then look in the folder that you store files in for files that have ~lock. in their name and delete them (probably just the problem file). Restart your computer, start OpenOffice, and then open the file.
Make sure you let the program completely shut down before shutting down your computer. Also get in the habit of saving your files and shutting down OpenOffice when you are walking away from your computer for extended periods of time.
