Thanks a lot Steve. I solved it after reading a Windows tutorial at home last 
night. That gave me the idea.
I needed to put the file into 

/usr/lib/jre-1.4.2_07/lib/ext/mysql-connector-java-3.1.8-bin.jar

and now it works great.
