Well, if the remaining problem had been that you had lost your additional words, as you suggested, it may well have.
I found "standard.dic" ... ... it seems that my Standard.dic has carried over, like yours did.
So you do have your additional words and have no need for the workaround.

Until you perform the necessary installation, nothing will improve, of course. Do I hear you saying that you don't have time to work this out but implying that others might find that time on your behalf? Hmmm...
All previous upgrades have been a dream - this one is a bit of a disaster. You don't realise how much you depend on your spellchecker until you don't have one.
I don't think you can have been following this list for the last few months without picking up the fact that dictionaries are handled differently in version 3.
o Go to http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/node/1232 and download the English Australian Dictionary (27 November version) in its new form. Put the .oxt file somewhere that you can keep it. o Double-click the .oxt file to run OpenOffice's Extension Manager and follow the instructions to install the dictionary. o While you are there, you may wish to disable any installed dictionaries that you know you will not need. o Now tinker appropriately with the language and dictionary settings in Tools | Options... (and possibly in existing documents).
If you didn't know where to find this dictionary - as I didn't, of course - you could find it by going to Tools | Extension Manager..., following the "Get more extensions here..." link, and either browsing to what you need or doing a search on "Australian".
