I had the same problem with that method of installing on Kubuntu.
For some reason, the "sudo dpkg -i *.deb" in the DEBS directory
failed because of "unresolved dependencies". I finally installed it by
putting a disk of APTonCD into the cdrom drive and doing an install.
The APTonCD did not do a recovery from the disk for some unknown
reason. But I believe it was an uncommon coincidence when getting
a successful install using an "apt-get install" and the disk had nothing
to do with anything, but it was there. Go figure!
I only mention it because that was how it was when I got a successful
install and can't ascribe to any particular event.
Good luck with the install and don't forget to add as much information
about the failures as you can so they can be analyzed more accurately.
