Which are the "help lines"? I can't find them in the list.
Basically I do not think I understand what this guy is saying, except that he closed the issue. Can somebody make it clear? Has the issue been replaced with another one to set the color to Automatic for whatever reasons? But wasn't this the issue in the first place?

There are a number of issues here, and I'm not sure I can address them all successfully. But here are some thoughts.

I don't know, but details such as this may well depend on your operating system; you do not say what this is, but it appears to be Windows XP.

Yes.

When you say you have been "using white text on dark background on [your] system", you mean that you have set this up as an accessibility option in Windows - right?

Not exactly. Using the Accessibility option created some problems, so I created a theme with blue (0, 0, 104) background and white (233, 233, 255) text.

And you say you have not made any specific
changes in OpenOffice. In that case, I see no problem. If I set white-on-black as a "High Contrast" option in my Windows XP and then use OpenOffice, the default colour for table borders remains black; this means that such borders print in black,

So far correct...

but they appear on screen in
OpenOffice as white (on black).

but over here they also appear on the screen as black. This is my problem.

If you want to change this *border*
colour - so that the document prints differently - you can do so at Table | Table Properties... | Borders | Line | Color (or right-click | Table... | Borders | Line | Color).

No I don't want to do this, but I have to do it to be able to see the borders better when working, and then I have to change them back to black to print, which is not a very neat solution...

If you choose not to give your table any border, it can nevertheless be helpful, of course, to be able to see the table *boundaries* whilst you are editing. These boundaries are what are described as "help lines" above, I think. These appear light grey by default, and on my system this light grey is perfectly visible against a black background.

I turned the boundaries to green and checked them to see what would happen but I do not see any difference in the appearance. The borders continue to appear black.

  (There
is no reason to ask what colour they print, of course, since they don't!) It may be that your table boundaries have somehow become switched off; if so, you can toggle this setting at Table | Table Boundaries (or right-click | Table Boundaries). If you need to change the colour of these boundaries from light grey to something else, you can do this at Tools | Options... | OpenOffice.org | Appearance | Custom colors | General | Table boundaries.

I checked the table boundaries and set them to Automatic which is my Text color. But there is not effect on the appearance of the document. The problem is that when I open Table... > Borders > Color is *Black*, _not_, as it should, *Automatic*, which I would expect to show as white on my screen and print black on the printout, as the text does.

Another thing worth saying is that the issue you quote (23655) dates from 2003 and refers to version 1.1. It suggests that changes would be made in version 3.0. If you are seeing behaviour different from the above (which I have confirmed in 3.1.0 for Windows XP), it may be that you have an older version of OpenOffice and may wish to upgrade.

My OOo version is 3.0.1, and when I check for updates it tells me that OpenOffice.org 3.0 is up to date...

I trust this helps.

It seems to me obvious that there should be a Automatic option in the table borders color, and there isn't, and I really do not understand why they considered the issue closed before they fixed the problem. Except if I do not understand what they did or what they are doing. They have a peculiar way of expressing themselves that is not clear to outsiders. That's why I asked for help here. From what they write, I gather that there seems to be a solution, but I do not understand what this solution is...

A clarification to what I wrote: when I choose Line > Style > None, the lines do appear white. But as I said, there should be an option for Color > Automatic, so they appear white but print black, like the text does.

PS. Sorry for posting by mistake this to the thread above. I tried to cancel the message but I don't know if it worked.
